How to: Measure for Assembled Balustrade Panels
Measuring up for assembled balustrade panels is a straightforward process, whether you choose to do it yourself or have a professional like a builder, carpenter, or handyman take the measurements. Here are the guidelines to follow
1. Measure the Distance Between Posts
- Measure the distance between your posts accurately. This measurement should be taken from the inside of one post to the inside of the next post.
- Take 2 measurements, the first at 1000mm from the deck/floor. The second 100mm from the floor. Use the widest measurement.
- Ensure that this measurement is precise, as the balustrade panels will be custom-made to fit these measurements. Do not add on any extra, see number 3 below.
2. Address No Post Scenarios
- In some cases, there might not be existing posts where you want to install the balustrade, such as when attaching it to a house wall.
- In such instances, you'll need to install a post or half-post to securely fix the balustrade. Ensure that these additional posts are securely anchored and aligned properly.
3. Allow for Some Extra Length
- Each balustrade panel is manufactured slightly longer at both ends. This additional length is typically a few millimetres.
- This extra length accounts for any slight discrepancies in your measurements or if the posts are not perfectly square. It's better to have a bit more length than not enough.
4. Trimming for Installation
- Once the balustrade panels are delivered to your site, they will need to be trimmed to their final size based on your actual measurements.
- Ensure that the trimming is done carefully and accurately to achieve a precise fit between the panels and the posts or wall.
5. Prime and Paint
- Follow the recommended LOSP painting instructions
6. Install panels
- Screw or nail the balustrade to the posts 100mm above floor level
6. Safety Considerations
- Always prioritise safety when installing balustrades. Ensure that all posts are securely anchored and that the balustrade panels are firmly attached to provide adequate support and protection.
7. Professional Assistance
- If you are unsure about any aspect of measuring or installing balustrade panels, it's advisable to seek the assistance of a qualified professional, such as a builder or carpenter, to ensure the job is done correctly and safely.
8. Compliance with Local Regulations
- Check with your local building authorities to ensure that your balustrade installation complies with all relevant building codes and regulations in your area. This is especially important for safety and legal reasons.
By following these guidelines and ensuring precise measurements, you can ensure a safe and aesthetically pleasing installation of assembled balustrade panels for your project.
