3 Things to Consider in Selecting Kitchen Handles

Handles are the final touch to kitchen cabinets whatever the style is. Selecting the perfect complementary handle isn't easy. Your choice can have a great impact on the overall look of your kitchen. It is a crucial detail that will pay dividends with a just little attention.

Below are 3 important considerations in selecting timber kitchen handles.

Style

To begin, it is good to narrow down the options by overall shape. Are you thinking of round or long handles?  Or do you want a mixture of both? Remember, you don't have to keep all the same style. Mix and match is also a good option.

Size

The world is your oyster when it comes to size, as all handles are made to order. Would you like your handles to stand out as a feature or be discreet? At this stage, it is also worth thinking about the function. Are they for a lightweight cupboard door? Or need to manage the suction of fridge door.

The size decision can be tricky and ultimately will be a personal one.

If unsure about size, follow the tip below for a quick, easy solution. This will give you a great visual concept of how the size will look on your doors and help you choose with confidence.

Test out a few different sizes until you find the perfect fit.

Timber species

Consider the palette of colours in your kitchen. Would you like to match your kitchen joinery, an existing timber accent, or simply have a contrasting colour?

Matching timbers can be a challenge with the natural variation in each species. However, there are some tricks!

When matching timbers with laminates, it is good to keep in mind that timber and laminate are different materials. There are some laminates that are excellent in similarity to the natural species, however a perfect match is rare. 'Best match' is more likely to be an achievable goal.

When it is too risky to match by species, then it is safest to choose a light coloured timber that you can stain to match the joinery doors.

You can check the Timber Colour Chart as a general guide to colour and grain.
